Burst has no account and never asks who you are. Your settings and your history stay on your computer. The app does send anonymous usage counts so we can tell whether it is working — what that is, and how to turn it off, is right below.
What stays on your machine
Everything the app records lives in your user folder and never leaves it:
- your settings — focus areas, reminder frequency, reminder style, corner position
- your history — which movements you completed and when
- any thumbs up or down you give a movement
There is no account to sign in to, and no copy of your history exists anywhere but your device. If you delete the app and its folder, it is gone. What we receive is only the anonymous counts described next — never the records themselves.
Anonymous usage data
Burst is new, and we genuinely cannot tell whether it helps anyone without some signal. So the app sends a small set of counts, tied to a random identifier created on your device at install and linked to nothing else — no name, no email, no account, no device fingerprint.
What we send:
- that a reminder appeared, and whether you started, finished or dismissed it
- which movement it was, by its short id (for example
seated-twist) - a thumbs up or down, if you give one
- your preferences when you change them — reminder style, corner, frequency, how many focus areas are on
- that the app launched, and a heartbeat every few hours while it runs, so we can see whether people keep it installed
- the app version and your operating system
What we never send: your activity history itself, anything you type, your IP address (our collector does not record it), your location, or any identifier that could be linked back to you.
You can turn this off. Settings → Share anonymous usage data. When it is off the app makes no telemetry request at all — it is not queued, batched or sent later. We will still ship you updates and the app works identically.
Our lawful basis for this is legitimate interests: understanding whether a free product is working, using the least data that can answer that. You can object at any time by switching it off.
What else leaves your machine
Update checks
Burst asks movewithburst.com whether a newer version exists — shortly after launch and about once a day. The request contains the app version and your platform. Like any web request it necessarily reveals your IP address to the server. We do not log these requests to build any profile of you, and they carry no identifier for you or your device.
Links you click
If you open Support or our website from inside the app, that opens your browser and is an ordinary visit to a website.
The website
This site is static and hosted on Cloudflare. We run no advertising and no tracking cookies on it. Cloudflare processes requests as our hosting provider and keeps standard operational logs.
If you give us your email address — for the Windows waiting list, or by writing to support — we use it to reply to you and to tell you when the thing you asked about is ready. We do not sell it, and we do not add you to a marketing list you did not ask for. Ask us to delete it and we will.
How long we keep it
Raw usage events are deleted automatically after 400 days — a sweep runs nightly, it is not something we remember to do. We keep aggregate counts that contain no identifier for longer, because a number like "how many people finished a stretch last March" is not about anyone.
Email addresses you send us are kept until you ask us to delete them, or until the thing you wrote about is long finished.
Who processes it, and where
We use Cloudflare for hosting, DNS, email forwarding and the usage database, acting as our processor under a data processing agreement. Usage data is currently stored in Cloudflare's Western North America region, which means it leaves the UK and EEA; Cloudflare's standard contractual clauses cover that transfer. We use no advertising networks, no data brokers, and no other third parties.
Children
Burst is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
Your rights
Your history lives on your machine, so access and export are answered by your own file system. For the anonymous usage data, tell us your install id — Settings shows it — and we will delete those rows. For anything you sent us directly, such as an email address, write to us and we will show you what we hold or delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we will say so on this page and update the date above. If we ever want to collect something beyond the list above, we will say so here first and ask — quietly widening what the app sends is exactly the thing we are trying not to do.
Complaints
If you think we have handled your data badly, please tell us first — hello@movewithburst.com — and we will try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or to your local supervisory authority if you are in the EEA.
